"When I'm Gone" is a song by American hip hop musician Eminem, featured on his 2005 compilation album Curtain Call: The Hits. When released as a single on December 6, 2005, the song charted at number eight on the American Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, number 22 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart, number four on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart.
The music video was directed by Anthony Mandler. Tarick Salmaci, (from the TV show The Contender) makes an appearance in the video with his wife.
Eminem’s song “When I’m Gone” was written in 2003 and released in 2005 by Shady Records, which was one of his singles in his album “Curtain Call: The Hits”. This album was made to seem as his last one that would be made in a while. Rumors were spreading saying that Eminem was at a point in his life were he need to take a musical l hiatus. Eminem says "I'm at a point in my life right now where I feel like I don't know where my career is going ... This is the reason that we called it 'Curtain Call', because this could be the final thing. We don't know."(Eminem34).
The song is about how Eminem’s fame of Slim Shady, his alto ego came between him and his family and almost tore them apart. Em says “Slim Shady eventually became a metaphor for the trappings of fame for me. For example, in the song “When I’m Gone” I say, “Shady made me/ but tonight Shady’s rock-a-bye baby.” Each stanza follows an abcde rhyme scheme.
Each verse states how much pain Eminem brings to his daughter Hailie and his wife Kim by never being a father or husband to neither of them because of his fame. For example, in the second verse it says, “She keeps scramming, she don’t want me to sing, “You’re making Mommy cry, why? Why is Mommy crying?” “Baby, Daddy ain’t leaving n more”, “Daddy you’re lying you always say that, you always say this is the last time but you ain’t leaving no more, Daddy you’re mine” (27-31). The artist is clearly brining pain to his beloved ones because of his fame. The song goes on to justify how Slim Shady was a big part of that pain Eminem raps, “ And put hand on her mother, who’s a spitting’ image of her, that’s Slim Shady, yeah baby, Slim Shady’s crazy”(15-16). The fame of the psycho side of him, Slim Shady was a huge part of why his family was breaking apart and how he wanted to do something about it by killing off Slim Shady. This is made clear when he says, “How could it be, that the curtain is closing on me I turn around, find a gun on the ground, cock it put it to my brain and scream “die Shady” and pop it” (70-73). There will be no more Slim Shady now it’s up to Marshall Mathers to pick up the pieces of his broken family.
